5 Desk Plants You (Probably) Won’t Kill

by TrueNorth Desks

Within every office space, the vibe can easily turn redundant. We all look for ways to add interest and beauty to our standing workstations. It’s important to invest in the overall aesthetic appeal of your office. It allows you to feel comfortable working in that space, and offers a sense of ownership. Pictures of family, framed prints, and colorful office supplies all help to enliven and personalize your desk area. You can also incorporate a few plants into your ergonomic workspace. Plants work while you work; they purify the air around you and offer a grounded, natural feel to the sometimes sterile office environment. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can still find something that works for you. Here are 5 desk plants that you (probably) won’t kill:

Spider Plant

The spider plant has vibrant green and white stripes, and each plant has numerous long stems reaching over the edge of the flower pot. Resembling the long legs of a spider, the green and white stems fall naturally along the side of the pot, and it looks really nice when hanging from above or on the edge of a top shelf. Place it above your adjustable height desk, and enjoy from below. It’s also one of the easiest plants to grow indoors, ideally in the shade, making it great for a windowless office.

Succulents & Cacti

Don’t try to keep these arid plants alive unless you have some sunlight on your desk! Succulents and cacti are pleasing plants that can be arranged in many ways to offer some interest to your standing desk. However, they’ll quickly die if they are in a low light or windowless office. Put them next to the window where they can receive lots of light and water them once a week.

Terrarium

Terrariums are a great choice for the officemate who wants some greenery, but mostly for the design of the container. Use decorative glass vases or mason jars to hold your enclosed plant design. Include a bit of gravel and soil at the bottom, and design a scene with small plants, moss, leaves, pinecones, or even small figurines. The small setting paints a picture at your desk, and you can easily be transported to a faraway land while working at your sit to stand desk.

Air Plants

Air plants are the easiest of the easiest indoor plants. They don’t require any soil and can truly go anywhere around your standing workstation. The minimalist appeal of air plants suits the design of the TrueNorth standing desks. They can be placed in a jar on your desk, or mounted to the wall above your computer screen. Wherever you decide to put them, they’ll easily add charm to your workweek.

Pothos

If you like a deep green plant with glossy leaves, the Pothos might be the best choice for you. It’s a hardy vine that grows quickly. The vibrant, glossy leaves drape over the edge of the container, and are a great addition to your shelves, file cabinet, or they can sit on the edge of your adjustable height desk. Once the vines get too long, take the trimmed stems and place them in water for a few weeks until they grow roots. Re-pot the fresh roots and you have another plant for yourself or for a friend. The Pothos is easy to care for and needs very little light. Water it once a week and watch it grow!
