Some people are really good at unplugging from their jobs on the weekends. Others have a hard time disconnecting from work. No matter which category you fall into, it is important to know there are some habits that successful people incorporate into their weekends.
First, you have to know how to maintain focus while at work. Many people work on the weekends because they feel they are not getting all of their work done during the week. Working at a standing desk increases your focus and creativity. Adjustable height desks allow you to work while standing and sit for breaks and meetings when necessary.
A recent study from Stanford states that a person’s productivity declines after a 50 hour workweek. Once you hit 55 hours in a workweek, your productivity is so low that there is no point in working any more hours. So those coworkers who are spending 60-70 hours a week at the office or plugged in on the weekends are accomplishing no more than the person who works a 50 hour workweek. If you can work a 50 (or less) hour workweek at a stand up desk, then you will be able to truly unwind and relax on the weekends, knowing that you have been as productive as you can be.
Now that you know how to be your most productive at work while working at a standing workstation, here are a few ways to spend your weekends that will help you to be successful.
This may be the hardest habit to start for people who love sleeping late on Saturdays. But waking up at the same time every day, even weekends, will help keep you energized on Monday. While it may feel good at the moment to hit that snooze button, resist the urge to stay in bed. Sleeping late will make you feel groggy all day and disrupt your waking time on Monday. Your Monday will be less productive because your sleep cycles will be off.
Having something to look forward to on the weekends can help you push through a difficult task at work. Whether it is buying tickets to a concert, trying out a new restaurant, or planning a hike, taking little adventures are a great way to spend your weekends.
If you are constantly checking emails or getting work updates during the weekend, then you are never able to relax and unwind. Your mind needs that break. If you are spending time with family and friends, then they also deserve your undivided attention. If totally unplugging for the weekend doesn’t work for you, then set specific times to check email. Try to keep it down to just once a day Saturday and once Sunday. After awhile, you may find that checking emails just once is plenty. Maybe you will even see that you can totally unplug for the weekend, and take care of business on Monday.
