How to Be Happier at Work

by TrueNorth Desks

If you have to work, and most of us do, then wouldn’t it be amazing if we could actually be happy while at work? American workers spend the majority of their waking hours at the office, so it is important that you find happiness and fulfillment there. Even if you are working at a job that you don’t love, there are some simple changes you can make in order to make your days more pleasant. And those of us that love our jobs can still incorporate some of these tips to stay happy on those more difficult days.

Here are a few tips from True North Desks on how you can be happier at work.

Take some time to “nest”

Creating some personal space in your office can bring a little more happiness to your day. Hanging some greenery at your standing desk can help clean the air around you and bring a feeling of the outdoors in. Placing pictures of your family or friends on your stand up desk gives you a chance to reflect on those relationships during your day. Be careful not to go overboard when nesting. Too much clutter will make it hard to keep your standing desk organized and may keep you from staying focused.

Eat Healthy and stay hydrated

Eating healthy and staying hydrated is important to your overall health and weight, but it is also vital to maintaining your energy and a good attitude. Eating light and energizing meals will help you avoid that mid-afternoon slump that we often feel after a heavy lunch. Working at a standing workstation will also help you keep up your energy after meals. Snacks are an important part of a healthy routine. Just be sure that the snacks you choose to eat while working at your standup desk are healthy and energizing options like nuts, yogurt, and fruit.

Being even just a little dehydrated can make you feel tired. Keep a reusable water bottle at your standing desk and be mindful to drink from it often and refill it as you need. Feeling energized and healthy will increase your happiness both at work and at home.

Don’t sit all day

If you are working at an adjustable height desk, it can be tempting to spend your day sitting even though you have the option to stand. You will feel better when your body is moving, which will improve your mood. Try to spend most of your workday standing and even take some breaks to exercise and stretch. There are some simple and subtle exercises you can do at your standing desk.

Reflect on your day

At the end of each day, take a minute to think over all that you accomplished that day. Make a list on a notepad or on your phone of the things that you do at work that truly bring you a sense of fulfillment. Even on the most mundane days, you will find that your work is meaningful. Ending your day with positive reflection will prepare you for happiness the next day as well.
