Scan Important Documents
Papers tend to be the biggest contributor to desk clutter. You can do the old school organizational method of filing them into folders, but you are still left with a ton of papers. Instead, scan all of your important documents and file them virtually. Scanning has gotten even more convenient with scanning apps for your smart phone, like CamScanner. You won’t have to worry about losing the document; it will always be at your fingertips.
Put All Like Things Together
Your books, magazines, paper clips—each item should be grouped together. This will allow you to find everything you need more quickly and keep things organized. Each item should also have a designated place at your standing desk. Clutter will accumulate when stuff doesn’t have a place to live.
Stop Piling Up Papers
Or anything for that matter. Just say NO to piles. When you have piles on your desk, you can’t see what’s in the middle or at the bottom. Plus, a pile just invites you to add more items on top, making the pile grow and grow, and eventually turning into madness. So just don’t do it.
Have you ever wondered how you amassed so many pens? Notebooks? Staplers? Stuff will continue to accumulate if you don’t limit the items you invite into your work area. After you’ve designated a place for your items to live, don’t allow any more items than what can fit in that area. For instance, put all your pens in a holder and limit the number of pens to what can fit in that space.
Create an Inviting Workspace
Your ergonomic workspace needs to be a place where you want to spend time. Have a few items in your area that make the space feel more like you and make you feel at ease. The more you like the area you work at, the more you will want to keep it clean.
Tidy Up Before You Leave
Yes, we would all love to jet out the door when the workday is over, but set aside 5-10 minutes each day to clean up your area. It may seem tough to do at first, but after a couple weeks you’ll do it without thinking.
