Years ago, it was common for employees to stay with a company for over ten years. Now, you’re lucky if people stick around past five. Companies have to put in effort if they want to keep their employees around longer. In order to do so, it’s best to understand what motivates people to work and then implement that into the work environment.
Give Employees a Sense of Purpose
Economists sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of the U.S. set out to discover what motivates people to work harder. They discovered that businesses get better results when employees have intrinsic motivators, such as a sense of purpose and meaning in their jobs, as opposed to bonus-like incentives. When employees find meaning in their work they feel more satisfied and connected, and therefore are more likely to stay with a company.
Your company doesn’t have to be a certified non-profit in order to give employees a sense of purpose; it’s in the message that’s being presented to them. Communicating to your employees that they have purpose and letting them experience that purpose on a daily basis is the key to employee satisfaction. But how do you do that?
Within Your Own Walls
There are numerous ways that companies can help employees feel like they’re doing some good, such as having an organization-wide volunteering effort. But it can also be as simple as creating an office layout that promotes the message of being purposeful. People want to be able to make connections and interactions with others, so break down the cubicle walls and have a space that allows people to come together and feel united. Also, set up stations throughout the office that have designated purposes. For example, an area solely devoted to brainstorming and another for taking breaks.
Start with Height Adjustable Desks
Ergonomic desks are an excellent way to facilitate this type of environment. Sit to stand desks allow employees more control. By being able to transform their workspace into whatever they require, they can feel that what they do matters and also feel valued. Standing workstations lend themselves well to open office layouts, which promote conversation and interactions between coworkers.
