We talked in an earlier post about how successful people spend their weekends. As a quick reminder, your weekends are an important time to unplug, relax, and recharge for the coming week at work.
People may try to tell you that spending more time at work means that you will be more productive. But a recent study found that once you have worked 50 hours, you become less and less productive. So whether you are working 50 hours or 70 hours, your productivity remains about the same. This should be great news for those of us who are ready for an excuse to step away from the standing desk for the weekend!
Working at a stand up desk is one way to increase your productivity and focus at work. When you are focused and driven during those 50 or so hours, you will be able to relax on the weekends, knowing that time at your standing workstation was time well-spent.
In addition to unplugging, planning small adventures, and waking up early, here are a few more ways that successful people spend their weekends.
We’ve heard it before, exercise is not only good for your body, but it is good for your mind. Exercising during the week can be difficult. Try to sneak in some workouts at your standup desk in order to increase your energy during the day.
On the weekends, try to spend at least one hour each day exercising. In order to make these workouts more fun, try something new. If your weekday workout consists of going to the gym, or heading out for a run, try going for a hike on the weekend. Playing tennis can be a fun way to exercise and spend some quality time with a friend. If you are feeling even more adventurous, head out for a kayaking adventure. Find friends who are seeking fun exercise activities on the weekends, too, and you can accomplish our next habit.
Your work week is spent at the office, and often dinners are spent with clients, coworkers, and others in your field. For many of us, there is very little time for friends and family during the week, so the weekends are the best time to find ways to spend quality time with those you care about and those who care about you. Take your kids to the park or the zoo, take your spouse out to dinner, visit your extended family, and plan cook-outs with your friends. Spending time with the people who know you best allows you to relax and unwind in a way that you just can’t during the week. You will head back to work on Monday feeling loved, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle any task.
So far, all of these habits have been a way to keep your mind off of work. But in order to stay successful, it is important that you prepare yourself to come back into the office on Monday. Whether you do this on Friday afternoon at the end of the day, or Sunday night is up to you. Make a list or a schedule for your Monday or your whole week. Getting this list done on Friday afternoon before unplugging for the weekend may be the best way to really let it all go for a few days. Take just 30 minutes to think through your task list for Monday. You will find that Monday morning will go smoothly, setting you up for another successful week at work.
