Portable Snacks to Enjoy at your Standing Desk

by TrueNorth Desks

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t agree that they could use a little more sleep and a little more energy. Sometimes it seems that there just isn’t enough time in the day to get the right amount of rest and exercise, especially when you are also balancing work, family, and eating right.

If you are fortunate enough to spend your days working at a standing desk, then you have one thing working in your favor when it comes to gaining more energy. Working at an adjustable height desk will increase your productivity compared with sitting at a traditional desk all day. Along with standing, getting regular exercise, and sleep, eating the right foods is necessary for maintaining your energy levels throughout the day. Here are some ideas for yummy, energizing, on the go snacks that you can eat while working at your stand up desk.

Apples and Nut Butter

If you crave sweet snacks, apples are a great replacement for your regular sugar-laden treat. Pairing them with a nut butter, such as peanut butter or almond butter, adds the protein your body needs to power through your day. Slice your apples at home and put them in a container. Squeeze a little lemon juice on them in order to keep them from browning. Scoop out one tablespoon of peanut butter to dip the apples in when you are feeling that mid morning slump.

Dried Fruits and Nuts

Keeping with the theme of fruit and nuts, dried fruit and nuts are a great portable snack. Many grocery stores sell pre-mixed fruit and nut combinations. While some can come with chocolate and candies, try to stick to the mixes that are purely fruit and nuts to avoid any added sugar. Buy a big bag at the store and portion some out into snack bags to keep at work. Having a healthy snack handy when you really need it helps you to avoid making bad food choices.

Crackers or Vegetables with Hummus

For those of us who crave salty snacks, crackers or veggies with some hummus is the perfect treat. Whole grain crackers are an easy accompaniment to hummus and can be kept at your office. For more vitamins, try carrots, cucumbers, or bell peppers. These can be prepared early in the week and left in the refrigerator in your break room.

Greek Yogurt and Fruit and Honey

This is the best treat for that mid-afternoon slump where you really just want to grab a handful of something sweet and sugary to give you a quick boost. A sugary snack will lead to a sugar high then a sugar crash, so reach for high protein greek yogurt instead. Top it with your favorite fruit and drizzle it with honey. It only takes a minute to make but will feel indulgent and help get you to the end of your work day.
Preparation is the key to eating well. Spend a little time on Sunday night to prep some healthy and portable snacks to keep at your office all week. All of the suggestions above are easy to eat, even at your standing workstation.
