American workers are not taking advantage of their vacation time, and it is time for that to change. Whoever thought there would be articles written in order to convince people that vacations are good for them? Vacations are great for your mind, body, and soul. They will also have you returning to work at your stand up desk refreshed and with a better attitude. But you also need to make sure that this precious time away from your standing workstation is spent in a way that will allow you to really rest.
Here are a few ways you can be sure to enjoy your vacation and feel ready to tackle work when you return.
Some may find it hard to exercise during vacation, but this is the best thing you can do for your brain. Whether you typically exercise at your standing desk everyday or go to the gym every morning, vacation is not the time to take a break from this routine. But it could be a fun time to try something new. If you are taking a beach vacation, try yoga on the beach or paddle-boarding in the ocean. Go for hikes if you are in the mountains. If you are exploring a new city, do so by foot, not by car.
This may be the hardest thing for many people to do, but it is important to truly unplug from work when you are on vacation. Turn off your work phone, resist checking emails, and leave your laptop on your standup desk at the office. If the thought of completely unplugging leaves you panicked, at least try it for a few hours each day. Spend 6 hours on the first day of your vacation totally unplugged. Chances are pretty good that you will end up loving how it feels not to be tethered to your phone for awhile.
Planning your vacation is one of the best ways to make sure that you will be able to relax and have a fun time. If you are not a planner, hire somebody to do it for you. This doesn’t mean that you have to have every hour planned out with something to do, unless that is what you want. But planning air travel, car accommodations, hotel stays, and even dinner reservations will leave you the space to breathe and take it easy.
Sitting on a beach for five days may sound relaxing, but you may find that you return to work feeling a little blah and tired. While much of your vacation time could be spent simply relaxing, plan some fun adventures, too. Explore museums, restaurants, and other cultural sites around your vacation spot. Ask locals where to go and what to do. This is a great way to feel like you are learning new things and improving yourself. You will come back to work a better person.
Before you book that grand vacation, be sure that the time you are spending at the office is productive and efficient by working at a standing desk. Standing desks are a great investment that will allow you to be more energetic and productive at work, making you ready for those vacation days.
